Harriet Beecher Stowe was a U.S. writer. She became known throughout the world for her book against slavery, Uncle Tom's Cabin. Harriet was born in Litchfield, Connecticut. Her father, Lyman Beecher, and her brother, Henry Ward Beecher, were both well-known preachers. Harriet was educated at the academy in Lithfield and at Hartford Female Seminary.

In 1836, Harriet married the Reverend Calvin Ellis Stowe, a professor in the Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio. Mrs. Stowe and her husband were deeply concerned about the plight of runaway slaves.
