Cincinnati, Ohio: Harriet Beecher Stowe grew up in a strict religious environment that considered plays immoral. Yet despite her refusal to grant requests for adaptation, so many stage productions of Uncle Tom's Cabin were produced--to popular acclaim--after the novel's 1852 publication that Stowe decided in 1854 or 1855 to write her own text for dramatic performance. She called it The Christian Slave.
