From Stephen Leacock to Bernard Shapiro, venerable meeting of the minds turns 75

It started out as a joint meeting of a few dozen academics from the Canadian Political Science Association and the Canadian Historical Association at Ottawa's Chateau Laurier hotel in 1931. It is now an academic smorgasbord of more than 70 learned societies that is expected to attract some 7,500 delegates this year. The Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, being held at York University starting at the end of May, is celebrating its 75th anniversary.
