As a young co-author, I remember agreeing rashly to preface chapters in a book with what we hoped were apt and humourous quotations. For the index we quoted Stephen Leacock: |Of course one has to have an index. Authors themselves would prefer not to have any. Having none would save trouble and compel reviewers to read the whole book instead of just the index.' But pity the person asked to review a dictionary, which is effectively just an expanded index.
