No es la primera vez que el dibujante y cineasta Hayao Miyazaki elige como personaje a una niña de 10 años. En 1972 realizó una serie de caricaturas para la televisión, basada en la novela de 1880 de Johanna Spyri: Heidi.

Treinta años después dio vida a Chihiro, pero en lugar de ponerla en los Alpes suizos, rodeada de cabras y pastores, la hizo pasar unos días alucinantes en un spa, rodeada de dragones y espectros.
