THIS IS a well-cast but cloying piece of Victoriana, culled from the book by Johanna Spyri about an orphan girl who is so sweet that even grumpy old grandpa, forced to let her live with him in an Alpine mountain chalet, begins to love her.

Younger children will appreciate it, but an awkward screenplay and uncertain direction make it pretty difficult for anyone else.
