SHIRLEY NOT: There have been more than a dozen adaptations of Johanna Spyri's popular 19th century book about a little orphaned girl who goes to live with her crusty old grandfather in the Swiss Alps, including a 1937 version starring Shirley Temple. But the difficulty of a quiet nonfantasy (as in NOT "Harry Potter") children's book making it on the big screen today is telling. Producers flirted with the idea of giving this Heidi a limited theatrical release after it finished filming last year. Instead it went directly to DVD.
