Virginia Musical Theatre takes on the French Revolution, a foreboding musical score, a cast of 25, hundreds of costume changes and a fencing duel. Oh, and don't forget the guillotine.

It's a full-fledged musical evening. The wonder is that it works. "The Scarlet Pimpernel,'' based on the novel by Baroness Emmuska Orczy with music by Frank Wildhorn, is a delight. Director Mark Hudgins has imported three fine singers for the leads and employs the sets and costumes from the national tour to add oomph to the musical season.
