There is indeed a rich field to be mined if anybody cares to get down seriously to sorting out the solecisms among the classics of English theatre.

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago the linguistic horrors that had hit me in The Merchant of Venice - two of them - and The Railway Children. I have now ascertained that Oliver Goldsmith was not beyond reproach, either - although he may have an excuse, not to say a very good reason.
