The Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., begins its very first season with a production of She Stoops to Conquer by Oliver Goldsmith. A group of young people, including Edward Mangum and Zelda and Thomas Fichandler, are the founders. Out of 17 offerings, shows that don't catch on are promptly yanked, while successes add additional weeks if the box-office warrants. Zelda Fichandler eventually assumes the role of artistic director, a post that she holds for 40 years.
