Dedication

Machiavelli notes that anyone who hopes to gain the favor of a prince
must present him with a gift. This book is his gift to Lorenzo de Medici. As
was the custom, Machiavelli depreciates the book, saying it is unworthy of
acceptance. Still, it may prove useful. The author has been close to the seats
of power, and has learned how princes gain and lose control of situations and
people. He likens himself to a humble landscape painter who surveys the scene
