One would not naturally choose Joel Schumacher as the director of the film adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical version of the hoary old Gaston Leroux melodrama. But he hasn't done a bad job.

The film looks lush enough to satisfy most LW's fans - the art direction is fabulous - and it was a little brave to pick a cast not overflowing with movie stars.
