"This is a musical about opera, not an opera."

That was composer-lyricist Maury Yeston's succinct explanation of how "Phantom," his stage version of Gaston Leroux's classic 1911 novel (created with playwright Arthur Kopit), differs from "The Phantom of the Opera," the Andrew Lloyd Webber spectacle that debuted in London in 1986.
