Director negotiates `Phantom' remake

Alfonso Arau ("Like Water for Chocolate") is in negotiations to direct a feature film remake of Gaston Leroux's classic 1911 novel The Phantom of the Opera for Universal Pictures and Mostow/ Lieberman.

The romantic horror story centers on a mad composer living in the cellars of the Paris Opera House who teaches a young soprano to sing after she sells him her soul for the sake of her opera career. Arau's version is expected to be a contemporary retelling of the French tale set in modern New York and seen through the eyes of the young diva Christina.
