`The Opera ghost really existed," wrote Gaston Leroux in the prologue to The Phantom of the Opera, his 1911 novel which, at last count, has inspired four musicals, a television mini-series and several films. "He was not, as was long believed, a creature of the imagination of the artists, the superstition of the managers, or a product of the absurd and impressionable brains of the young ladies of the ballet."

But whether or not the Phantom haunted the cavernous innards of that Belle Epoque gem, the Paris Opera House, he certainly has invaded the imagination of audiences and musical theater ...
