The year 2002, when the 125th anniversary of his birth coincided with the 40th of his death, was the Hermann Hesse Year par excellence in Germany and Switzerland. The jubilee reminds an American observer of nothing so much as the Hesse cult among U.S. youth in the 1960s, for which I coined the phrase "Saint Hesse among the Hippies" (American-German Review 35 [1969]: 19--23).
