Analysis Of Selected Characters (In Order Of Appearance)

Siddhartha.

One of the names of the historical Buddha, Gotama, it signifies "the one
who has attained his goal." There are certain similarities between Hesse's
character in the novel and the historical figure, but the reader should be
careful not to attempt to draw exact parallels.

Siddhartha is brought up in an ideal atmosphere; his parents provide the
necessities - but not the luxuries-of life: love, guidance, and discipline.
But he senses that their way is not his way and he rejects the path ...
