Siddhartha: Chapters 8 - 12
Chapter Eight. By The River
Title
Siddhartha returns to the same river which he originally crossed some
twenty years earlier. The river no longer marks a boundary between two
different worlds. Siddhartha does not cross it now only to enter a new life,
but he recognizes its values and he decides to remain "by" it.
Despair and suicide
Siddhartha reaches his lowest point as he looks into the river and
contemplates suicide. As often in Hesse, despair is here presented as a
