Composition, Publication, And Translation Of Siddartha
Genesis and publication
Siddhartha was begun in 1919, when Hesse was enjoying one of his most
happy and productive periods. He quickly finished the first four chapters and
published them in a periodical. He turned then to other projects (including
the story Klingsor's Last Summer), and resumed work on Siddhartha later in the
winter of 1919-1920. He completed the second portion, consisting of chapters
five through eight, and then found himself unable to complete his story.
