Contemplative and slow-moving, Conrad Rooks' 1972 adaptation of "Siddhartha" is true to the letter of Hermann Hesse's novel but misses the mystical punch that made it a campus craze.

Gorgeously photographed in lovely Indian locations by Sven Nykvist, the movie has been restored for Hesse's 125th birthday. It follows its hero on his lifelong quest for the contentment of the soul but, as with many road journeys, even the attractive scenery loses its novelty.
