"Courtship of Miles Standish, The" (1858) A poetic romance by Henry Wadsworth LONGFELLOW set in the PLYMOUTH COLONY of New England. Colony leader Miles Standish entrusts the wooing of Priscilla Mullins to his friend John Alden, but she, preferring the messenger to the message, utters the famous line "Why don't you speak for yourself, John?"
