Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was the United States' most popular poet
during most of the 1800s. He wrote ``The Village Blacksmith,'' ``Paul
Revere's Ride,'' and ``The Children's Hour,'' three poems that continue
to remain well known. He also composed the beautifully flowing story-
poem, The Song of Hiawatha, based on authentic Native American legends.
It has been estimated that The Song of Hiawatha sold about a million
copies during Longfellow's lifetime, probably a world's record for
