A letter by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-82) not in Andrew Hilen's edition is addressed to Thomas Bulfinch (1796-1867). The latter wanted to dedicate his book The Age of Fable to the popular poet and sent the dedication he had in mind. The reply from Longfellow is as follows:(1)

Newport Aug 31 1855.

Dear Sir,

Your letter reached me too late yesterday for me to send my answer by return of mail.

Your Dedication seems to me very well, as you have written it; though I fear the expression "interpreter of Poets" might be obscure to many of your readers.
