Nathaniel Hawthorne's book 'The House of the Seven Gables' was published simultaneously with the popularization of the daguerreotype. Naturally, Hawthorne depicted the use of the daguerreotype in his book, but presented its popularity as a metaphor for the representational possibilities of art. The chapter 'Maule's Well' discusses the importance of the trade when the character Holgrave teaches Phoebe the process of daguerreotype and shows her an image of her relative, Judge Pyncheon. Hawthorne uses the daguerreotype as a characterization technique and as a tool for romantic imagination.
