Maryse Conde's novel 'I, Tituba, Black Witch of Salem' dramatizes the life of Tituba, the black slave who was charged with bewitching the young women of Salem, MA. By giving voice to the silent witness of one of the most reprehensible chapters of US history, Conde follows the feminist tradition of writing voiceless women back into existence. In doing so, Conde pays tribute to the influence of Nathaniel Hawthorne and Aime Cesaire.
