May 13--In 1850, Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote "The Scarlet Letter."

The main character, Hester Prynne, is forced to publicly display a red letter A as punishment for adultery.

Gov. Phil Bredesen, in outlining his reforms of the state's public education funding formula, painted a large letter A on top of the dollars that flow to the 132 public school districts.

While the letter here refers to something different from the one in "The Scarlet Letter," it serves as a reminder for all to see: accountability.
