NEW LONDON, Conn. - In Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel "The Scarlet Letter," Hester Prynne's punishment for betraying her husband was to wear a scarlet "A" -- for adultery -- pinned to her chest.
For modern-day Hester Prynnes' arrested this summer on charges of adultery in southeastern Connecticut, the scarlet letter has been replaced by unwanted media attention over why a rarely-enforced law suddenly has been put to use.
Three women and one man have been arrested and charged with adultery in three Connecticut towns since June.
