The celebration of Nathaniel Hawthorne's 200th birthday extends to the waterfront this weekend during the Salem Maritime Festival.
Events are at the Salem Maritime National Historic Site, which includes the Custom House Hawthorne describes in "The Scarlet Letter."
Free tours of the Custom House and a replica of the tall ship Friendship, docked at Derby Wharf, are given throughout the weekend.
Festivities include traditional maritime and Yankee crafts, children's activities, and food. Free entertainment is provided by a Navy band, Atwater & Donnelly, Jez Lowe, Poor Richard's Penny, Buddy ...
