Hawthorne, Nathaniel
July 4, 1804 Born on this day in 1804 Nathaniel Hawthorne labored in obscurity for most of his life before writing the seminal American novel "The Scarlet Letter" in 1851. Sadly, public appreciation for the fluid prose style and penetrating moral acuity for that work and for "The House of the Seven Gables" did not come until years after the author's death.
