Hawthorne's "Preface":
Hawthorne writes to his "Reader" from a "foreign land" (England). He
plans to state a "few particulars about the work ... offered to the Public";
then, he will make his "most reverential bow and retire behind the curtain."
He claims that he has written "a fanciful story, evolving a thoughtful moral,"
with no attempt at picturing Italian manners and character. Italy, the setting
of the "Romance," offers Hawthorne a "sort of poetic or fairy precinct," where
the basic truths of daily living will ...
