Nathaniel Hawthorne, the great 19th century author of "The Scarlet Letter,'' turned away from writing another novel when the Civil War brought him to southeastern Virginia.
On assignment from The Atlantic Monthly, Hawthorne arrived here after the Battle of Hampton Roads, March 8 and 9, 1862, and described a scene of maritime destruction that heralded the end of the wooden-hulled navy. He also went aboard the U.S.S. Monitor and reported his impressions of that ironclad.
He didn't like what he saw.
