To paraphrase author Nathaniel Hawthorne's opening sentence in his book "The House of the Seven Gables," on the west side of Kitty Hawk down a side street stands a neighborhood of condominiums with peaked gables facing toward various points of the compass.

The side street is Cay Trail; the neighborhood is The Gables, a small community of 30 home sites developed by Edgewater Construction and Lorimer Inc.

Since construction began in March 2001, 19 condominiums have been sold. The remaining 11 are listed between $207,500 and $234,500.
