Weimar, a former East German town, has been fittingly chosen as Europe's city of culture for 1999, making it the last European Cultural Capital for the 20th century. The smallest city to be named as Cultural Capital since Athen's selection in 1985, it was the residence of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe for 57 years.
