In 1774, the great German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe produced a book called The Sorrows of Young Werther.
Shortly after its publication, officials noticed a disturbing phenomenon: Youths all over Germany were committing suicide in apparent imitation of the book's fictional hero. Some youths were found wearing the same clothing as Werther. Some reportedly had the book clutched to their chests, opened to the page where Werther took his life.
