Monks return to spiritual desert

WASHINGTON, Jun 12, 2001 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- If Europe has a wounded heart, western Bohemia fits this description. Once famous for Marienbad and Karlsbad, its glamorous Spas that attracted the likes of Russia's Czar Peter the Great and German Poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, this has been a wasteland since World War II.

Even now, the villages and towns in the surrounding countryside are almost empty since the Communists had driven out millions of Sudeten Germans.
