Faust

Romantic:

Faust is the archetypal romantic. Mephistopheles and the Lord designate
him as such in the Prologue, in their dispute over the nature and goodness of
man. When the Lord introduces Faust's name into the conversation,
Mephistopheles comments that Faust is a man who "demands from Heaven its
fairest star" and at the same time demands "from earth the highest joy it
bears." In his comment Mephistopheles has focused on a paradox which
identifies the romantic and which gives tension to all romantic ...
