Walpurgis Night (lines 3835-4222):
The scene is a wild region of the Harz Mountains in central Germany. In
the distance are the towns of Schierke and Elend. Faust and Mephistopheles are
climbing up a steep hill to the top of the Brocken, the highest peak on the
mountain. The Brocken is, according to legend, where the famed Walpurgis
Night, or Witches' Sabbath, is held once a year. Walpurgis Night is the
gathering of witches and evil spirits from all over the earth; on this night
