Faust's Study (lines 1178-1529):
Faust enters the room with the poodle he has found during his day's
outing. It is night again. It has been a great day, Faust says. I have learned
to honor the life of man and I am almost ready to succumb to the love of God.
The black poodle growls and jumps around the room at these words. Faust
commands the dog to be quiet and continues his meditations.
