As the curtains part, we find Dr. Heinrich Faust alone in his study. The
room is narrow, with a high ceiling, and is cluttered with books and
scientific instruments. The time is the sixteenth century; the place is a
large city in Germany. Dr. Faust is a middle-aged man. He is one of the most
famous doctors and scholars of his day. He is sitting at his desk, restless
and bored with his studies. He launches into a long monologue expressing his
present state of mind.
