Faust: A Preface:
Much that is important in Goethe's tragedy has been discussed in the
introduction or will be considered in the summary and supplementary sections
that follow. However, the reader should bear in mind several additional
questions during his reading.
The first question is: Is this a drama? When we read or see a play we
expect certain things of it. Among them are continuity of theme, suspense,
action, and dramatic interest. Faust, except in the portion of the first part
