First 2,000 repaired books returned to historic Weimar library after fire

A month after thousands of books from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries were damaged or destroyed in a fire, some 2,000 repaired books were returned Tuesday to a historic German library.

The Sept. 2 fire at the Duchess Anna Amalia Library tore through the roof and top floor of the 16th-century rococo palace, which houses the library in the city where the nation's most revered writer, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, spent much of his life.

The fire destroyed about 50,000 works, and damaged about 62,000 more. Restoring those books will cost an ...
