Republican Congressional leaders have pledged nearly $1 million to refurbish the home of abolitionist Frederick Douglass in southeast Washington, D.C.

They signed a resolution during a ceremony at the Douglass home that they will present to Congress to earmark $955,000 for the restoration of the historic site.

Speaker J. Dennis Hastert was joined by Senators Bill Frist of Tennessee and Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania and other leaders, along with special guest Frederick Douglass IV of Baltimore, the great-great grandson of the 19th century abolitionist.
