Frederick Douglass escaped from Maryland slavery in 1838 and established himself as an eloquent spokesman for the abolitionist cause. After purchasing his own freedom with the proceeds from a lecture tour, he organized African-American brigades during the Civil War and wrote his autobiography "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass".
