The Frederick Douglass Crusaders, a tiny group of black Republicans on the city's south side, are still mourning what might have been: a black renaissance within the Grand Old Party born of a presidential candidacy by Gen. Colin Powell.

Had Powell run, the Crusaders believe, their lonely days in the party would have been over.
