AS MY SONS climbed the 85 stairs from the Visitor Center to the front porch of the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site, they pointed out the Washington Monument and the Capitol. It was easy for them to appreciate why Douglass loved the view, but it was hard for them to understand that before the former slave moved in, blacks and immigrants weren't allowed to live in the area.
Douglass broke that barrier when the developer filed for bankruptcy and the mansion became available by auction, explained our guide, Roger Powell, as he led us through the house in Anacostia.
