Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey was born in 1818, a fifth-generation American slave. His early years were spent with his grandmother, Betsey Bailey, living on a small farm. In 1824, he was taken by his grandmother to live and work at the home of his master -- Aaron Anthony. Anthony, who was rumored to be Frederick's father, was chief overseer of the Lloyd Plantation.
