WHEN JOHN LARKIN was sixteen (1861), he went to work for Justus Weller. In 1870, when Weller moved to Chicago to establish a soap manfacturary, John went with him.

In 1871, John became Weller's partner; the partnership lasted until 1875. While in Illinois, Larkin met and married former Buffaloian Hannah Frances Hubbard. A fortuitous union; Hannah's brother was the talented Elbert Hubbard.

Now at thirty, and homesick, Larkin was eager to establish his own soap business. So, in 1875 he sold his share in Weller's firm and returned to Buffalo, New York. Shortly after, he began operation of his ...
