The Inferno, the first of the three books of the medieval (14th century) religious allegory The Divine Comedy, presents a vision of hell etched with grotesque realistic detail. Dante blends historical, mythological and religious references, including a fictionalized version of himself and some of his contemporaries--most notably his enemies, as he takes a tourist's descent into hell at the beginning of his journey toward Paradise.
