September 13, 1321 Italian poet Dante Alighieri, author of The Divine Comedy, died on this day in 1321. His epic narration of a journey through Hell and Purgatory (guided by Virgil) and Heaven (guided by Beatrice) drew its inspiration in part from his own lifelong devotion to Beatrice Portinari.
