Phil Spano always picks up the check.
His contributions to folks in need is one reason he was recently given the Golden Lion Award by the Sons of Italy. He received the Dante Alighieri Society's Man of the Year Award in 1997.
Not bad for an uneducated guy who spent his life making his money from the land - growing stuff on it, mining it, burying stuff in it.
Phil, 77, grew up the hard way. His parents, Joseph and Jennie, raised crops and seven kids on 20 acres in Fisher Ranch, south of Welby.
